Roping steers, archery, and finding genuine gemstones were some of the highlights of the Derry Roundup, this year's Derry Community Girl Scouts' Camping Weekend.  Over 100 members of the Derry Girl Scouts assembled at Camp Kettleford in Bedford, NH to camp out and experience some old western life.

The event opened with a fire-lit Western sing-along.  Troops taught each other traditional songs such as She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain and Home on the Range.  Fire-toasted Marshmallows and of course S' mores, added to the fun. Campers retired undaunted by the light rain.

Brilliant sunshine greeted the girls to a day of workshops.  Daisies and Brownies panned for raw and cut gemstones including emeralds, amethysts and blue topaz.  Meanwhile Juniors and Older Girls tried their hands at archery presented by Marcia Wyman of the New England School of Archery.  Team roping was a popular workshop.  Ed and Cindy Canane from Cascade Brook Farm taught the girls to heal and head rope using traditional training dummies.  The scouts dressed in Western wear for old-time sepia photos thanks to Clix Camera Shop.  The photos were mounted in hand-decorated frames.  Western-style bling was the project in the jewelry workshop.

Dinner was a chuck wagon challenge.  Troops were given a list of foods found in a chuck wagon.  They designed and prepared their menus from the list.  Grilled chicken, chili with beans made from scratch and cornbread were some of the foods enjoyed by the campers.

A hoedown with music provided by DJ John Binari highlighted the evening.  SWAPS were exchanged for one more memorabilia to take home.  Happy, tired campers retired for one more night in rustic Adirondacks before returning home the next morning.

The event was put on thanks to the efforts of Chris Cox, Amy Cook, Joanne Curran, Nikki Kneeland, Terri Lutinski, AnnMarie Masessa, Tammy Pelletier and Chairperson Louise Korzeb.
