Susan Coakley, a registered nurse who travels to Africa to provide medical attention to those in need, met with Junior Girl Scouts and explained the difficulties of life in West Africa. The girls were so moved by Ms. Coakley's presentation that they wanted to help in some way.  They decided to make a quilt for a little girl named Doris who was orphaned when her parents died of HIV.

Each girl picked out her own material for the quilt and hand-sewed her square with a message to Doris in the middle.  The squares were hand tied together.  Most of the girls in the troop had never sewn before and learned to sew to complete this project.  The quilt was completed over several months.  Susan brought the quilt to Doris in Africa on her next mission.   Doris was so surprised to see this handmade quilt!  Doris slept with it the first night that she had it and didn’t let it go.

The girls in Troop 59 have sent their love to this little girl in a quilt.  The quilt represents love, hope and faith.  These Girl Scouts made a big difference in this little girl’s life with a personal touch from each of them.

Girl Scouts Perform Energy Audit of Pheasant Lane Mall

This fall, third and fourth graders from the Science and Technology Interest Group 13080, the “Girl Scout Energy Stars,” participated in the Regional FIRST Lego League Power Puzzle Challenge.  They built a Lego Mindstorm Robot that had to complete preprogrammed missions and present a research project.  Their presentation was based on an energy audit of the Pheasant Lane Mall and proposed solutions for the mall to reduce energy consumption.  They presented their findings at the Nashua Service Unit leader’s meeting and at Charlotte Avenue Elementary School.  Their hard work and research also inspired their own energy awareness Try-It and Junior Badge based on the activities they completed preparing for the event.
