Community Spotlight

Brownie Troop 724 leaders Kim Bock and Jillian Smith let their girls discover that even little first graders can change their world. Inspired by author/illustrator Tracy Kane (in photo meeting girls) and the natural playground being built at their school, the girls wanted to create a space within this new playground for all their schoolmates to build fairyhouses. The girls presented their ideas to the playground design committee and received unanimous approval. They convinced the PTA to bring Tracy Kane to the school to read her books and help launch the fairyhouse building project at the school. Lastly they designed a sign for the fairyhouse area and had a local artist paint it for them. The girls are still proud of their accomplishments and go up periodically to see if the fairies have been there.

TROOP HAPPENINGS

Selling cookies is not just an important fundraiser for our girls, but it provides a wealth of real-life learning opportunities. Before the girls begin selling, each troop goes through a planning process to set cookie selling goals. Brownie Troop 733 leaders Sandi Van Scoyoc and Tammy Kroyer began by asking Brownie parents to help their daughters set realistic individual goals based on last year's actual sales, then report those goals to the troop. The troop voted to hold a booth sale, projected sales from that effort, and calculated the total profit they would make if every girl reached her goal. The next task was for the troop to brainstorm activities for the year including community service ideas. With the help of their leaders and cookie manager Lisa Bobek, the girls estimated the costs involved for each activity. From here they were able for formulate short, mid and long range plans to meet their activity goals.

"You're Fired" pottery was high on the list of places Junior Troop 332 wanted to go this year. These 4th and 5th graders chose to go just before Christmas so they could make holiday presents for friends and family. The girls had a wonderful time and really showed some creative flair!

In preparation for their sleepover ski trip to Gorham, Junior Troop 332 Juniors are making their own pj bottoms. They will also be mastering some other needlework skills as they make a quilt to donate to CASA. As girls who love outdoor activities, it's no surprise this troop has plans to ski and go camping with some of the money they raise from their cookie sales.
